MYTH: Strength training impedes endurance running performance
FACT: Strength training has MANY benefits for endurance runners
Benefits of Strength Training:
Decreased running related risk of injuries
Improved running economy making you a more efficient and powerful runner.
To have a strong core or powerhouse making a more efficient, better form and more fluid running
Exercise examples:
Squats, lunges, step ups, deadlifts, power clean
Pushups. Plank. Russian twist. back extension. Fitball jack knife
Fitball leg curls. Pelvic bridge, Russian hamstring
Bosu ball stability and balance exercises
Many runners struggle with the thought of losing a run set by doing a strength set, however research shows that if you run train 80% and 20% strength train you will reach significant gains to improve run performance and efficiency.
This can be achieved in 2 x 30 minute sessions per week or 5-10 minute mini sessions incorporated into the weekly training cycle.
Take home message: Strength training WILL improve endurance runners’ efficiency and ultimately improve their running performance.
